The Joomla! project recently announced their support for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing as a Silver sponsor. The event, which attracts around 8,000 women from around the world, is being held in Phoenix, Arizona (USA) between 8-10 October 2014.
There will be a booth representing Joomla at the event. Ruth Cheesley from the Community Leadership Team will run a session within the Student Opportunities Lab entitled ‘Getting involved with Joomla’. This session will showcase the opportunities for women to get involved with Open Source projects such as Joomla during their academic career and beyond.
The event is an incredibly inspirational opportunity for any women with an interest in computing and we would really encourage you to attend if you’re able to do so.
Call for mentors
We expect to receive a lot of interest at the conference. We are setting up clear channels through which people can get involved with the Joomla project. Through our experience with various teams within the project, we have found this works best by setting up an ‘on-boarding’ process.
To facilitate this, we are currently recruiting mentors who would be willing to assist with bringing new volunteers on board, helping them find their feet in the community, putting them in touch with the right teams, and supporting them in the early days of their Joomla journey.
If you have great communication skills, are actively involved within any area of the project, and feel you would like to dedicate some time to help new volunteers get started, please add your details via this form.
Come and join us!
We would really love to meet up with community members at Grace Hopper, so if you’re planning to attend do let us know, and drop past the booth to say hello!
Sarah Watz and Ruth Cheesley will also be speaking at a Joomla User Group Phoenix meetup so if you’re local to the area why not come along?
